 Rules of Play
7-8 Year Old Baseball
  • 3 outs or once throughyour lineup per inning, whichever comes first.
  • Coaches on defense or first and third base coaches call outs (they are in best position to see).
  • 3 swinging strikes with pitching machine, foul tip on third strike is not out unless caught by catcher.
  • Then 3 swinging strikes with coach pitches then batter is out, (no tee) foul tip on third strike is not out unless caught by catcher.
  • If a batter consistently allows good pitches to go by without swinging, he/she must be given a warning. If the batter will not swing at good pitches, the coach must begin calling strikes.
  • Let second tier of outfielders play, but play it like this
    • Pitcher, catcher, 1, 2, SS, 3rd, L, LC, C, RC, R = 11 kids (if 12 kids spread them out more in grass in outfield)
    • 7-8 is too young to sit on bench. They don’t pay attention and then don’t learn. Easier for coaches to rotate and sub them if all in.
  • Catcher in full gear, behind or off to side, up to his abilities, for short hits and actual catching if they can do it. Coach back there too.
  • Warm up 15 minute and 1 hour and 15 minute game, fits into our schedule now (perhaps if 7 innings complete in less than 1 hour and 15 minutes game is over).
  • Conservative base running, coaches stop runners if under control, one base on overthrows
    • Enforces catching ball, reward as it stops runner even if not out.
    • Also teaches kids to get ball under control and not to just throw it around.
  • No metal spikes are allowed.
  • All players should play five (5) different positions throughout the season.
  • No lead-offs or stealing allowed.
    • A base runner may leave the base when the batter makes contact with the ball.
    • After 1 warning, a runner leading off is called out.
  • The team at bat will provide a coach to feed the balls into the pitching machine.
    • This coach must not interfere with play or touch a live ball.
    • The coach feeding the pitching machine will act as the umpire at 2nd base.
    • If a batted or thrown ball hits the coach or pitching machine it is a live ball.
  • Coaches for the first game of the evening need to arrive approximately 20 minutes early to set up and adjust the pitching machine and bases.
  • Coaches from the last game of the evening are responsible for putting the pitching machine and bases away in the field boxes, cleaning the field and dugout areas, and locking the field boxes.
  • DO NOT PUT BASES ON TOP OF THE PITCHING MACHINE.
  • The coach is responsible for all MAA baseball equipment.
  • Base distance = 50’ Pitching distance = 35’
