This league is designed to teach the fundamentals of basketball and then expand from these fundamentals as the players progress through grades 5th and 6th. Every level is a learning league and a great way to familiarize children with the sport of basketball. 3rd and 4th grades will alternate play on Thursday and Friday night in separate leagues for boys and girls in the Primary School Gym.
Girls' league has been changed to the Fall Season to help accommodate gym space and will coincide with the Girls AMSAC league.
Girls ' leagues will start 09/30-12/09/2010
Boys' leagues will start 01/20-4/1/2011
Rules of Play
3rd/4th Grade Rules (applies to both boys and girls leagues)
This league is to build on the fundamentals from the 1st grade league and introduce the players to game situations through scrimmages. Below lays out how the season is to be utilized.
Weeks 1-3
30 minutes practice / 30 minutes of game
Weeks 4-6
30 minutes practice / 30 minutes of game
Week 7
Week 7 = 20 minutes of practice / 40 minutes of game
Weeks 8-12
Weeks 8-12 = 20 minutes of practice / 40 minutes of game
There is a running clock for the game. It should only be stopped at the following:
Time outs called by either a team, the referee or an injury.
Free throws
During the last 2 minutes of the game for any whistle.
A game will consist of 4–6 minute quarters with 1 minute between quarters.
Each team is allowed two 30 second time outs for each game.
The rims will be set at 8.5 feet
The game will start with a jump ball. All other jump ball situations will use the possession arrows.
The 3 second rule will apply. A warning ONLY will be given for exceeding the 3 second rule. Coaches should not allow camping in the lane.
5 fouls per player per game.
Free throws are for shooting fouls only. NO bonus rule will be used.
No 3 point lines/3 point shots.
10 point maximum per player per game. The player can still play but may not make any more baskets. Any basket made by the player will not be added to the score of the game.
No fast breaks by any team with a 10 point or greater lead. Referee will blow the whistle to stop the break, allow the defense to get back, and then resume play.
No full court press at anytime. Defense is allowed to pick up at half court.
Defense will be man to man coverage with no double-teaming. (Coach’s note: at the start of each quarter match the players up at midcourt so they know whom they have to cover.)
Coaches will referee their own games. Coaches are encouraged to place themselves on the floor to assist with the game.
